This is a page of suggested character quirks that has been complied from a list on Dark World RPG, a list of traits on Fiction Writer's Mentor and Google definition searches. It is by no means all-inclusive; feel free to add to it if you can think of any others. Further ideas for characters may be found at TV Tropes.

  • Able- Independent, assertive, self-motivated.
  • Absent-minded- Preoccupied to the extent of being unaware of one's immediate surroundings. Abstracted, daydreaming, inattentive, oblivious, forgetful.
  • Abusive- Characterised by improper infliction of physical or psychological maltreatment towards another.
  • Active- Energetic, vibrant, enjoys activity.
  • Addict- One who is addicted, as to narcotics or a compulsive activity. (gambling, drugs, sex, etc. List specific addiction.)
  • Adventurous- Willing to take risks or to try out new methods, ideas, or experiences.
  • Affable- Friendly, good-natured, or easy to talk to.
  • Affected- Uses behaviour that is artificial, pretentious, and designed to impress.
  • Affectionate- A person who readily feels or shows fondness or tenderness.
  • Afraid- Prone to feeling fear or anxiety; frightened.
  • Aggressive-Ready or likely to attack or confront, or pursuing one's aims and interests forcefully, sometimes unduly so; characterised by or resulting from aggression.
  • Aimless- Devoid of direction or purpose.
  • Alert- Quick to notice any unusual and potentially dangerous or difficult circumstances; vigilant.
  • Alcoholic- A person who drinks alcoholic substances habitually and to excess or who suffers from alcoholism.
  • Ambitious- Having or showing a strong desire and determination to succeed.
  • Amiable- Having or displaying a friendly and pleasant manner.
  • Angry- Having a strong feeling of or showing annoyance, displeasure, or hostility; full of anger.
  • Animated- Full of life or excitement; lively.
  • Annoyed- Troubled persistently especially with petty annoyances.
  • Anxious- Full of mental distress or uneasiness because of fear of danger or misfortune; greatly worried; solicitous.
  • Apologetic- Self-deprecating; humble.
  • Appreciative- Characterised by readily feeling or showing appreciation.
  • Argumentative-Given to arguing; disputatious.
  • Arrogant- Having or displaying a sense of overbearing self-worth or self-importance. Inclined to social exclusiveness and who rebuff the advances of people considered inferior. Snobbish.
  • Attentive- Characterised by or giving attention; observant.
  • Audacious- Recklessly bold in defiance of convention, propriety, law, or the like; insolent; braze, disobedient.
  • Austere- Severe or strict in manner, attitude, or appearance.
  • Avaricious- Having or showing an extreme greed for wealth or material gain.
  • Average- Characterised by a lack of outstanding qualities; part of the status quo.
  • Awkward- Characterised by a lack of grace or conversational skill.


B

  • Babyish- Characteristic of a baby, puerile in the extreme.
  • Bad- A person that is corrupt, sinful or lacking in moral fibre.
  • Badass- Likely to cause trouble; tough and dangerous. An impressive person of superlative skill. Or, as Urban Dictionary puts it, "Ultra-cool motherfucker"
  • Bashful- Reluctant to draw attention to oneself; shy.
  • Bewildered- Characterised by a perplexed and confused manner.
  • Bigmouth- A loud-mouthed or gossipy person.
  • Bigot- One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.
  • Blasé- Unconcerned; nonchalant. Not easily ruffled; sophisticated.
  • Blowhard- A blustering boastful person; a braggart.
  • Blunt- Characterised by directness in manner or speech; without subtlety or evasion. Frank, callous, insensitive, brusque.
  • Boastful- Showing excessive pride and self-satisfaction in one's achievements, possessions, or abilities; thrasonical.
  • Bold- In a bad sense, too forward; taking undue liberties; over assuming or confident; lacking proper modesty or restraint; rude; impudent. Abrupt, brazen, cheeky, brassy, audacious.
  • Boorish- Ill-mannered and coarse and contemptible in behaviour or appearance.
  • Bored- Characterised by weariness due to lack of interest, stimulus or occupation.
  • Bossy- Fond of giving people orders; domineering.
  • Brainy- Having or showing intelligence; clever.
  • Brave- Having or showing courage; ready to face and endure adversity.
  • Bright- Lively; cheerful. Or intelligent; clever.
  • Brilliant- Distinguished by unusual mental keenness or alertness.
  • Brutish- Resembling or characteristic of a brute; bestial and ill-mannered.
  • Busy- Having a great deal to do.


C

  • Calm- Not easily agitated or roused; tranquil.
  • Callous- They are hardened to emotions, rarely showing any form of it in expression. Unfeeling. Cold.
  • Candid- Truthful and straightforward; frank.
  • Capable- Characterised by an ability to achieve efficiently whatever one has to do; very competent.
  • Capricious- Given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.
  • Carefree- Free (either due to reality or a negligent attitude) from anxiety or responsibility.
  • Careful- Habitual attention to and avoidance of potential danger, mishap, or harm; cautious.
  • Careless- Not giving sufficient attention or thought to avoiding harm or errors.
  • Caring- Displaying kindness and concern for others.
  • Caustic- Marked by incisive sarcasm; sharp-tongued.
  • Cautious- Characterised by attention to potential problems or dangers.
  • Changeable- A person that is easily swayed in some manner; inconsistent and erratic.
  • Charismatic- Exercising a compelling charm that inspires devotion in others.
  • Charming- Pleasant or attractive; well-versed in social niceties.
  • Cheerful- Noticeably happy and optimistic.
  • Childish- Marked by or indicating a lack of maturity; puerile.
  • Civilised- Polite and well-mannered. This adjective carries with it a connotation of arrogance.
  • Clever- Quick to understand, learn, and devise or apply ideas; intelligent. Or skilled at something; "Clever with his hands."
  • Clumsy- Awkward in movement or in handling things.
  • Coarse- Crude or unrefined in taste, manners, or language.
  • Cold-hearted- Lacking in kindness or warmth; devoid of sympathy or feeling.
  • Committed- Bound or obligated, as under a pledge to a particular cause, action, person, or attitude.
  • Communicative- Talkative, especially about feelings and opinions.
  • Compassionate- Understanding and empathising with the pain of others.
  • Competent- Efficient and capable.
  • Complacent- Contented to a fault; self-satisfied and unconcerned.
  • Complex- An exaggerated or obsessive concern or fear. (List specific complex.)
  • Conceited- Holding or characterised by an unduly high opinion of oneself; vain
  • Concerned- Anxious; troubled.
  • Confident- Having or showing assurance and self-reliance.
  • Confused- Unable to think clearly; bewildered.
  • Conscientious- The state of being thorough, careful, or vigilant; it implies a desire to do a task well.
  • Considerate- Careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt to others
  • Consistent- Unchanging in achievement or effect over a period of time.
  • Contented- Satisfied with things as they are.
  • Cooperative- Marked by willingness to cooperate; compliant
  • Courageous- Not deterred by danger or pain; brave.
  • Cowardly- Exhibiting the characteristics of a coward, particularly ignoble fear.
  • Crafty- Skilled in or marked by underhandedness, deviousness, or deception
  • Creative- Having or showing an ability to make new things or think of new ideas.
  • Critical- Inclined to judge severely and find fault. Alternatively, characterised by careful, exact evaluation and judgement.
  • Cross- Grumpy, short-tempered.
  • Cruel- Mean to anyone or anything, without care or regard to consequences and feelings.
  • Cultured- Characterised by refined taste and manners and good education.
  • Curious- Marked by desire to investigate and learn; inquisitive. Or marked by inquisitive interest in others' concerns; nosy.
  • Cursed- A person who has befallen a prayer for evil or misfortune, placed under a spell, or borne into an evil circumstance, and suffers for it. Damned.

  • Dainty- Delicately beautiful or charming
  • Dangerous- Able or likely to cause physical injury; a person whose company is risky, hazardous or unsafe.
  • Daring- Adventurous or audaciously bold.
  • Dark- Characterised by a gloomy, dismal manner.
  • Dauntless- Showing fearless determination; not easily swayed from their goals.
  • Decisive- Having or showing the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively.
  • Deferential- Marked by or showing deference or respect; respectful; courteous.
  • Demanding- Making others work hard or meet high standards; requiring much attention.
  • Dependable- Trustworthy and reliable.
  • Dependent- Unable to exist, sustain oneself, or act appropriately or normally without the assistance or direction of another.
  • Depressed- In a state of general unhappiness or despondency
  • Deranged- Mentally decayed. Insane. Crazy. Mad. Psychotic.
  • Desiccated- Dry, dull, or lifeless in personality.
  • Despondent- Feeling or showing extreme discouragement, dejection, or depression. In low spirits due to a loss of hope or courage.
  • Determined- Characterised by the resolve to see a decision or decisions through to their end.
  • Devoted- This character is loyal to a person, cause or belief.
  • Diligent- Constant in effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything.
  • Disability- A disadvantage or deficiency, especially a physical or mental impairment that interferes with or prevents normal achievement in a particular area. (List the disability or disabilities. E.g.: blind, missing limbs, deaf, colourblind, no sense of smell, etc)

  • Liar- Compulsively and purposefully tells false truths more often than not. A person who has lied or who lies repeatedly.

  • Pacifist- Opposition to war or violence as a means of resolving disputes. (Can double as a merit in certain cases)
  • Paranoid- Exhibiting or characterised by extreme and irrational fear or distrust of others.
  • Patient- Able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious
  • Patriotic- Having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one's country.
  • Peaceful- Tranquil and/or inclined to avoid conflict.
  • Peevish- Expressing fretfulness and discontent, or unjustifiable dissatisfaction. Cantankerous, cross, ill-tempered, testy, captious, discontented, crotchety, cranky, ornery.
  • Perserverant- Persistent in doing something despite difficulty; unwavering.
  • Persistent- Continuing firmly or obstinately in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition
  • Persuasive- Able or likely to persuade a person to believe or do a particular thing.
  • Perverse- Contrary to the accepted or expected standard or practice, especially when concerning sexual matters.
  • Pest- One that pesters or annoys, with or without realising it. Nuisance. Annoying. Nag.
  • Pessimist- A tendency to stress the negative or unfavourable or to take the gloomiest possible view.
  • Perfectionist- A propensity for being displeased with anything that is not perfect or does not meet extremely high standards.
  • Phobia- They have a severe form of fear when it comes to this one thing. (Dark, Spiders, Cats, tight spaces, etc. List specific phobia.)The Phobia List.
  • Picky- Fussy, hard to please.
  • Pitiful- Deserving or arousing pity; miserable and inadequate.
  • Plain- Simple, not elaborate. Devoid of pretensions.
  • Playful- Light-hearted, fond of amusement; predisposed to playing games.
  • Pleasant- Friendly and considerate; likeable.
  • Pleasing- Satisfying or appealing, or agreeable and unctuous.
  • Polite-
  • Poor- Lacking sufficient money to live at a standard considered comfortable or normal in a society.
  • Popular- Liked or admired by many people or by a particular person or group.
  • Positive- Constructive, optimistic, or confident.
  • Practical- Level-headed, efficient, and unspeculative. No-nonsense. (can double for a merit)
  • Precarious- Dependent on circumstances beyond one's control; uncertain; unstable; insecure.
  • Predictable- Easily seen through and assessable, where almost anyone can predict reactions and actions of said person by having met or known them even for a short time.
  • Prissy- Fussily and excessively respectable.
  • Prim- Stiffly formal and respectable.
  • Primitive- Unaffected or little affected by civilising influences; uncivilised; savage.
  • Proper- Excessively correct in conduct; vigorously moral.
  • Proud- Filled with or showing excessive self-esteem, and will often shirk help from others for the sake of pride.
  • Prudent- Acting with or showing care and thought for the future.
  • Punctual- Punctuality is the characteristic of being able to complete a required task or fulfil an obligation before or at a previously designated time.
  • Purposeful- Having or showing determination or resolve.

  • Quarrelsome- Confrontational and/or aggressive.
  • Quick- Swift, particularly of intellect.
  • Queer- Strange; odd. Or something that goes against established norms, particularly those of gender and/or sexuality.
  • Quick-tempered- Easily made angry.
  • Quiet- Making little or no noise, reserved.

  • Rational- Being in or characterised by full possession and use of one's reason. Not often affected by emotional factors.
  • Rake- An immoral or dissolute person, acting without moral restraint, who defies established religious, social, expected precepts; a freethinker.
  • Reasonable- Having sound judgement; fair and sensible.
  • Rebellious- Defying or resisting some established authority, government, or tradition; insubordinate; inclined to rebel.
  • Reckless- Heedless. Headstrong. Foolhardy. Unthinking boldness, wild carelessness and disregard for consequences.
  • Relaxed- Without strain or anxiety; calm.
  • Reliable- Consistently good in quality or performance; able to be trusted.
  • Remorseless- Without remorse; merciless; pitiless; relentless.

  • Rigorous- Rigidly accurate; allowing no deviation from a standard; demanding strict attention to rules and procedures.

  • Rowdy- Tending to create noisy disturbances; rough, loud, or disorderly.
  • Rude- Bad mannered; having a poor sense of social mores or intentionally violating them.

  • Sadist- The deriving of sexual gratification or the tendency to derive sexual gratification from inflicting pain or emotional abuse on others. Deriving of pleasure, or the tendency to derive pleasure, from cruelty.
  • Sadomasochist- Both sadist and masochist combined.
  • Sarcastic- A subtle form of mockery in which an intended meaning is conveyed obliquely.
  • Satisfied- Contented; pleased with their life.
  • Scared- Fearful; frightened.
  • Scatty- Absent-minded and disorganised.
  • Sceptic- One who instinctively or habitually doubts, questions, or disagrees with assertions or generally accepted conclusions.
  • Scheming- Given to or involved in making secret and underhanded plans.
  • Scoundrel- A wicked or evil person; someone who does evil deliberately.
  • Scruffy- Untidy; rakish in appearance.
  • Secretive- Having an inclination to secrecy.
  • Seducer- To lead others astray, as from duty, rectitude, or the like; corrupt. To attempt to lead or draw someone away, as from principles, faith, or allegiance.
  • Self-confident- Self-assured: showing poise and confidence in one's own worth.
  • Selfish- Concerned chiefly or only with oneself.
  • Self-Martyr- One who purposely makes a great show of suffering in order to arouse sympathy from others, as a form of manipulation, and always for a selfish cause or reason.
  • Self-righteous- Piously sure of one's own righteousness; moralistic. Exhibiting pious self-assurance. Holier-than-thou, sanctimonious.
  • Senile- Showing a decline or deterioration of physical strength or mental functioning, esp. short-term memory and alertness, as a result of old age or disease.
  • Sensitive- Easily offended, upset or hurt.
  • Sentimental- Characterised by sentiment, sentimentality or excess emotion; using their emotions rather than their reason.
  • Serious- Feeling sorrow; sorrowful, mournful.
  • Shallow- Lacking depth of intellect or knowledge; concerned only with what is obvious.
  • Sharp-witted- Clever, keen of intellect, swift of thought.
  • Shiftless- Lazy, unmotivated.
  • Shifty- Having the appearance of someone dishonest, criminal or unreliable; such as someone with shifty eyes.
  • Shrewd- Showing clever resourcefulness in practical matters; artful, tricky or cunning.
  • Shy- Reserved; disinclined to familiar approach; timid.
  • Silly- Exhibiting a lack of wisdom or good sense; foolish. Or lacking seriousness or responsibleness; frivolous.
  • Simple- Having or manifesting little sense or intelligence.
  • Sincere- Saying what they genuinely feel or believe; not dishonest or hypocritical.
  • Sly- Artfully cunning; secretly mischievous; wily.
  • Smart Ass- Thinks they know it all, and in some ways they may, but they can be greatly annoying and difficult to deal with at times, especially in arguments.
  • Sneaky- Marked by deception and secrecy; furtive and surreptitious.
  • Soft-hearted- Having softness or tenderness of heart that can lead them into trouble; susceptible of pity or other kindly affection. They cannot resist helping someone they see in trouble, suffering or in need, and often don't think of the repercussions or situation before doing so.
  • Solemn- Deeply earnest, serious, and sober.
  • Spendthrift- Someone who spends money improvidently or wastefully.
  • Spineless- Lacking courage. Cowardly, wimp, lily-livered, gutless.
  • Spiteful- Showing malicious ill will and a desire to hurt; motivated by spite; vindictive person who will look for occasions for resentment. Vengeful.
  • Spoiled- Treated with excessive indulgence and pampering from earliest childhood, and has no notion of hard work, self care or money management; coddled, pampered. Having the character or disposition harmed by pampering or over-solicitous attention.
  • Stern- Having a hardness and severity of nature or manner.
  • Stingy- Extremely close and covetous; meanly avaricious; niggardly; miserly; penurious.
  • Strange- Not normal; odd, unusual, surprising, out of the ordinary.
  • Strict- Governed or governing by exact rules; observing exact rules; severe; rigorous.
  • Strong- A person, place or thing that is noted as having properties of strength (physical or inner).
  • Stubborn- Unreasonably, often perversely unyielding; bullheaded. Firmly resolved or determined; resolute.
  • Studious- Given to study or thought; devoted to the acquisition of knowledge from books; as, a studious scholar.
  • Submissive- Meekly obedient or passive.
  • Successful- Having achieved popularity, profit, or distinction.
  • Superstitious- An irrational belief arising from ignorance or fear from an irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome.
  • Supportive- Providing encouragement or emotional help.
  • Suspicious- Distrustful or tending to suspect.
  • Sweet- Having a pleasing disposition.
  • Squeamish- Excessively fastidious and easily disgusted.


T

  • Taciturn- Reserved or uncommunicative in speech; saying little.
  • Tactless- Lacking or showing a lack of what is fitting and considerate in dealing with others.
  • Talented- Endowed with special, in particular intellectual, abilities; gifted.
  • Talkative- Tending to talk a lot.
  • Tardy- Characterised by lateness.
  • Temperamental- Moody, irritable, or sensitive. Excitable, volatile, emotional.
  • Temperate- Moderate in mood and behaviour; patient.
  • Temptation- They have something that tempts, entices, or allures them, that is hard to resist. This could be anything, and can drive the character to do things of ill nature.
  • Theatrical- Having a flair for over dramatising situations, doing things in a 'big way' and love to be 'centre stage'.
  • Thorough- Painstaking and careful not to miss or omit any detail when given a task.
  • Thoughtful- Demonstrating kindness or consideration for others.
  • Thoughtless- Marked by or showing lack of due thought or care; careless; thoughtless; insensitive.
  • Thrifty- Given to, or evincing, thrift; characterised by economy and good management of property; sparing; frugal.
  • Timid-Tends to be shy and/or quiet, shrinking away from offering opinions or from strangers and newcomers, fearing confrontations and violence.
  • Tired- In need of some rest or sleep; fatigued.
  • Tireless- Indefatigable, untiring and not yielding to fatigue.
  • Tolerant- Tending to permit, allow, understand, or accept something, even if they find it disagreeable.
  • Tongue-tied- Speechless or confused in expression, as from shyness, embarrassment, or astonishment.
  • Touchy- Easily offended; oversensitive; volatile.
  • Tough- Strong and resilient; sturdy. Physically or mentally hardy.
  • Troublemaker- Someone who deliberately stirs up trouble, intentionally or unintentionally.
  • Trusting- Showing or tending to have a belief in a person's honesty or sincerity; not suspicious.
  • Trustworthy- A trustworthy person is someone in whom you can place your trust and rest assured that the trust shall not be betrayed.
  • Truthful- Characterised by telling or expressing the truth; honest or candid.

  • Ugly- Very unattractive or unpleasant to look at; offensive to the sense of beauty; displeasing in appearance. Uncomely, unsightly, unlovely, homely.
  • Unconcerned- Showing a lack of worry or interest.
  • Uncoordinated- Lacking physical or mental coordination
  • Undependable- Unreliable: not worthy of reliance or trust.
  • Understanding- Sympathetically aware of other people's feelings; tolerant and forgiving.
  • Unforgiving- Unwilling or unable to forgive. Unforgiving people tend to hold grudges over the smallest things.
  • Unfriendly- Antisocial, unpleasant, hostile. Devoid of or antagonistic to social instincts or practices.
  • Ungrateful- Not feeling or showing gratitude; an ingrate.
  • Unhappy- Sad, discontented.
  • Unkind- Inconsiderate and harsh in dealings with others.
  • Unlucky- Marked by or causing misfortune; ill-fated. Destined for misfortune; doomed.
  • Unmerciful- Characteristically lacking mercy; ruthless.
  • Unselfish- A person who puts the needs and wishes of others above his or her own. Not necessarily submissive or subservient.
  • Untrustworthy- Not worthy of trust or belief. Backstabber.
  • Unpredictable- Difficult to foretell or foresee, their actions are so chaotic its impossible to know what they are going to do next.
  • User- A person who uses something or someone selfishly or unethically.

  • Vacant- Characterised by or resulting from lack of thought or intelligent awareness.
  • Vain- Holding or characterised by an unduly high opinion of their physical appearance. Lovers of themselves. Conceited, egotistic, narcissistic.
  • Violent- Prone to using unrestrained force to solve dilemmas.
  • Virtuous- Having or showing high moral standards.

W

  • Warm- Kind, hospitable or loving. The kind of person that makes friends easily.
  • Weak- Lacking the power to perform physically demanding tasks; lacking physical strength and energy.
  • Weak-willed- Lacking willpower, strength of will to carry out one's decisions, wishes, or plans. Easily swayed.
  • Whore- Harlot. A prostitute, a person who is considered sexually promiscuous, considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.
  • Wicked- Evil or morally wrong, often implies a sadistic streak.
  • Wild- Characterised by uncivilised, unruly behaviour.
  • Wise- Having or showing experience, knowledge, and good judgement.
  • Wishy-washy- A person weak in willpower, courage or vitality.
  • Withdrawn- Not friendly or Sociable. Aloof.
  • Witty- Showing or characterised by quick and inventive verbal humour.
  • Worrier- This character is a worry-wart. They are constantly fretting about something.

Y

  • Young- This character is chronologically young; probably below the age of twenty-five. This implies, though does not necessarily dictate, a lack of life experience.

Z

  • Zealot- An excessively zealous person; fanatic.
