MVP
Meta/Out of Character Explanation
MVPs are the equivalent of bosses in Ragnarok Online. Though they can be challenging to beat, they often reward valuable items, and their cards are often gateways to powerful builds.
In-World Information
MVP is a designation given to particularly dangerous creatures that inhabit the world. Fragments from the lost kingdom of Alfheim mention MVPs, making the term over five millennia old. MVP may stand for
- Majestic Venerated Predator
- Monstrous Vicious Power
- Maligned Veiled Prowler
- Mythic Voracious Phantom
- Malum Venatus Potentia
MVPs are predatory, territorial creatures. Any who cross their paths are advised to flee. There are brave souls who quest to fell these monsters, whose bodies are often host to valuable items. Through some cruel twist of fate, however, these MVPs are forever returned to the world. Perhaps even Niflheim fears them.
List of Known MVPs
Amon Ra
Location: Somewhere in the Morroc Pyramid.
Baphomet
Location: A ruined temple north of Prontera.
Baphomet is a powerful demon who was once sealed in a forgotten temple of Odin by a powerful group of warriors. Over time, this seal has weakened, and now Baphomet's power begins to seep through. Wielding a deadly scythe, the demon's body is covered in coarse, brown fur. Baphomet has cloven feet, and his head is similar to a goats, with proud, curling horns. This appearance may or may not be Baphomet's true form -- the creature that appears in the temple is a mere aspect. Many smaller creatures of similar appearance may also be found in the temple. Monks from St. Capitolina Abbey will often brave the depths of this temple to exterminate these small creatures. The monks fear that, with the passing of time, these creatures may grow into baphomets in their own right.
Dark Lord
The malevolent, monstrous shadow that haunts Glastheim. A lord among monsters, scholars believe that the Dark Lord is Schmitz von Walter, the tyrant that ruled Rune-Midgarts some five centuries ago. The specifics of how he attained this form are not known, but it is generally assumed that it involved a critical mass of negative emotions and magic. Energy from Hel and Muspelheim, along with the maddening whispers of Satan Morroc, are likely to have contributed to his form and power.
Location: Glastheim.
Doppelganger
There are times magic is unpredictable. 'Doppelganger' is a Schwarz word meaning 'double walker', coined some centuries past by a sage. This monster takes the form of a norman swordsman whose name is forgotten to time. Doppelganger was a demon summoned during the Geffenia conflict. Though it looks like a norman, this creature is a child of Satan Morocc. Do not be fooled by its comely appearance. His sword moves swift as the wind that howls in the depths of Geffen Tower - beware it sting and listen for the braying of horses in the dark... Location: Sealed beneath Geffen Tower.
Dracula
Location: Sealed beneath Geffen Tower.
Following the long-ago fall of Glastheim, Rune-Midgarts knew relative peace for a time. During this age of progress and peace, there was one mage-scholar of Geffen Tower who came upon an old tome in a neglected corner of the Tower's libraries. This mage-scholar was one of great intellect and fierce might. In battle, he wielded a staff so sharpened that it became like a lance. In battle, he showed both martial and magical might. While he was known as an even-tempered man, he grew increasingly erratic after finding this tome. From the first time he opened the book, a greater demon began to whisper to the mage known as Dracula, offering power and knowledge for ever-increasing costs.
By the time Dracula summoned the demon, the mage accepted without hesitation the final bargain for an existence of undying might. Dracula was transformed into a vampire, the first to blight the world since the era of Alfheim. With his newfound might, Dracula sought to rule over those he once worked alongside. He set his sights on ruling Geffen, then the entire Rune-Midgarts kingdom. His hubris was his downfall, and though the mages of Geffen were unable to kill Dracula, they were able to seal him beneath Geffen Tower. This was done to keep him and his disease from the world.
Unfortunately, Dracula is powerful. His magic reaches through the shadows of Geffen, and through these shadows, he whispers. Many young mages have found themselves in the Tower's libraries, a lantern or conjured flame to keep the darkness away and offer silent company. From the flickering shadows come promises of power and unending life. The number of mages that go missing is a secret kept by the Tower. It is simple enough to explain their disappearance as a magical accident. However, almost all vampires in the modern world can trace their bloodline to Dracula.
